Agatha Christie, Woman of Mystery

Written by John Escott.

Oxford Bookworms Library Stage 2.

Agatha started writing since she was eighteen on her mother's recommendation.

At first, she wrote novels(not detective) but every time she showed them to publishers, they turned them down.

She met a young army officer called Reggie Lucy and they promised to get married.

But he had to go to Hong Kong, so they couldn't see each other for 2 years.

One day, another army officer called Archie Christie who love Agatha proposed to her.

They got married.

Archie went to France for war, and Agatha went to work in the war as a volunteer nurse.

She worked in the hospital dispensary, and there she learned about poisons, which would be used in her detective novels later.

Her first detective novel was "The Mysterious Affair at Styles".

Agatha made a protagonist, Belgian detective "Hercule Poirot".

Hercule Poirot played an important role in many novels.

Her writings were very popular.

One day, she suddenly disappeared.

She left her hometown and stayed in a hotel under an assumed name.

Nobody knows exactly why she did such a thing; she might lose some of her memories or wanted to disguise herself into a total different person.

We can guess just a part of the reasons considering her situation at that time; she had a hard time because her mother passed away and her husband cheated on her.

She finally divorced and met a young archaeologist who was fourteen years younger than her.

He loved and proposed her, then they got married.

Since then, she wrote detective novel again.

Queen of England liked her novel.

She wrote a play for Queen's birthday.

The play still put on.
